    When online care isn't suitable

Online care isn't right for everyone. We'll recommend in-person care if:

    • you are under 18
    • you need a physical examination, tests or a procedure
    • the diagnosis is uncertain, or the photos and information aren't enough to assess you safely
    • you have a mole or skin mark that could be skin cancer and needs an urgent in-person check
    • your symptoms are severe, getting worse quickly, or haven't improved with previous treatment
    • you need a treatment that can only be started by a specialist in person

    Get urgent help if…

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, chest pain, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Get same-day help from NHS 111, your GP or an urgent treatment centre if you feel very unwell, have a high temperature with a spreading, hot or painful area of skin, or your symptoms are getting worse quickly.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or feel you cannot cope, call NHS 111 or your GP, or call Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24 hours). In an emergency, call 999.

Our online service is not for emergencies.

    Frequently asked questions

Which conditions can a doctor help with online?

We can assess many common skin and hair conditions, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and hair loss, as well as some other everyday health concerns listed on this page. A doctor reviews every assessment and will tell you if your problem needs to be seen in person instead.

How do I know if online care is right for me?

Online care can suit adults with a non-urgent problem that can be assessed safely from a questionnaire and clear photos. It is not suitable for emergencies, for anyone under 18, or when a doctor needs to examine you or arrange tests. If online care is not right for you, the doctor will explain why and where to go instead.

Will I always get a prescription?

No. A doctor decides what is safe and appropriate for you after reviewing your answers and photos. Your plan may be self-care advice, a non-prescription product, a prescription, or a recommendation to see your GP or a specialist in person.

    Who reviews my assessment?

Every assessment is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor. Technology helps organise your answers, but all assessment and prescribing decisions are made by a doctor.

What if my condition is not listed?

You can describe your concern when you start a consultation. A doctor will review it and tell you whether we can help online or where you should go instead.

Can I use this service in an emergency?

No. If you have a medical emergency, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, swelling of the lips, face or throat, or signs of a severe infection, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent advice that is not an emergency, contact NHS 111 or your GP.
